Café Jambo

Café Jambo in Mechelen was more than just a bar; it was a vibrant cultural meeting place and a hub of political activism. Founded by Mthombeni, the city’s first Black resident, South African militant , the café became a critical center for anti-apartheid activities, including the Boycott Outspan Action. Despite its energetic and inclusive atmosphere, Café Jambo frequently faced racist attacks. The café played a key role in launching the local anti-apartheid movement, providing a space for political campaigning and raising awareness against apartheid. At the same time, it served as a cultural exchange venue where open-minded individuals enjoyed its unique ambiance, despite the hostility and assaults it faced, breaking windows and physical attacks. Café Jambo symbolized the struggle for racial equality, acting as a bridge between diverse communities. It fostered political awareness and community solidarity, even amidst the confrontations that marked the daily lives of its visitors. The stories of Café Jambo reflect the resilience and spirit of a community committed to fighting racial injustice, paving the way for future generations in Mechelen.
