Malek Kellou

Malek Kellou  is an Algerian-French documentary filmmaker, director, and former television producer widely recognized for exploring colonial history, forced displacement, and intergenerational trauma. Born in Algeria, he and his family were forcefully relocated to military camps by the French army during the Algerian War, a traumatic childhood event that deeply shaped his cinematic vision. After studying filmmaking in Brussels and Paris, Kellou worked within the Algerian national cinema sector before moving to Nancy, France, where he spent three decades as a prominent director for the French public broadcaster France 3. In his later career, Kellou collaborated closely with his filmmaker daughter, Dorothée-Myriam Kellou, directing powerful, autobiographical projects. These include the acclaimed documentary A Mansourah, tu nous as séparés (2019), which broke the silence surrounding the wartime deportation of Algerian civilians, and Le Fantôme du sergent Blandan (2024), a film examining a colonial statue from his childhood that resurfaced in his French hometown, leading to a major local decolonial public arts project.
