L'Amicale des Marins

The Amicale des Marins Congolais (AMC) was established in 1951-1952 in Antwerp by the Redemptorist Fathers to support Congolese seamen of the Compagnie Maritime Belge du Congo-Belge. Due to colonial restrictions, these sailors were often forbidden to land in Antwerp. The organisation helped these sailors find work and accommodation . Initially based at the Stella Maris centre in Antwerp, a global network for supporting seafarers, the AMC became a kind of community centre for Congolese in Antwerp where weddings, baptisms, communion and other celebrations took place. The AMC closed in the early 1980s after complaints from local residents.
