EMIM

L'Espace Mémorial de l'Immigration Marocaine (EMIM) was founded in 2001 to celebrate 40 years of Moroccan presence in Belgium in 2004. The objectives of the EMIM include preserving the archives and passing on the heritage to current and future generations, establishing a documentation and research centre, and collecting information on the social, economic, cultural and political life of Moroccan immigration in Belgium. The EMIM has sought to safeguard the memory of Moroccan immigrants who have lived or are living in Belgium by collecting information and documents in order to preserve traces and pass on a heritage and legacy to present and future generations. In 2004, it coordinated a series of events to commemorate the fortieth anniversary of the bilateral labour agreement between Belgium and Morocco. As part of this, an appeal to save the archives of the Moroccan community in Belgium was successfully launched, enabling a significant quantity of documents to be collected. The EMIM played a key role in the creation of the Espace Magh (Magrhebin Cultural Centre in Brussels). The 2004 commemorations brought together the groups and individuals who took part in these activities. These closer ties will be reflected in the creation of Espace Magh.
